32 The community of believers was one in heart and mind. None of them would say, “This is mine!” about any of their possessions, but held everything in common. 33 The apostles continued to bear powerful witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and an abundance of grace was at work among them all. Acts 4:32-33

At the beginning of every new year, we like to make resolutions for how this year will differ from the previous one. We promise ourselves this is the year we lose that extra person we gained from previously failed promises. Or this year we will be a better spouse, friend, co-worker. By Valentine’s Day-old habits prove hard to break and the old dog still hasn’t learned any new coping skills.

With the lessons I have learned from past new year failures I am taking a new approach in 2019. I will not make myself promises I can’t keep. I instead will focus on one word I pray will define my 2019. After thinking long and hard and placing this in prayer, that word is INFLUENCE. This new year I want to be a person of influence. A person who inspires others to reach their full God-given potential. To be a person who encourages others lifts others up in prayer, is there for them when times get tough and celebrate with others what God is doing in their lives.

This poem by an unknown writer describes this goal for 2019.

Leave countless marks for good or ill, ere sets the evening sun. My life shall touch a dozen lives before this day is done; This is the wish I always wish, the prayer I always pray:  Lord, may my life help other lives it touches by the way. Source Unknown.

Ponder these questions for yourself. What word will define you in 2019? What difference will you make? How will your life impact others? Have an influential 2019.

I think my word is “restoration.” I don’t know … yet … what or who will be going through restoration. I suspect that will be revealed in the next couple of days!

Good word. We could all use undeserved love and forgiveness.

Here’s a post about my word for the year: https://beutiflee.wordpress.com/2019/01/01/simple-2019-thoughts/
I need to put Faith in God, because I’ve seen how far He’s gotten me! When I increase my Faith, God handles all the other areas.

JOY – even considered a devotional acronym – Just Offer Yourself! We have only self – it is all the Lord wishes of us and all we can give – and I refuse to let anyone steal my JOY -in HIM – Blessings!

Good post. “I will not make myself promises I can’t keep. I instead will focus on one word I pray will define my 2019.” – I like this approach. I don’t make resolutions, but I do think about what I might want to focus on in the New Year.

I have chosen a word for 2019. It is COMMIT . I chose it as a verb rather than the noun of commitment. I have a blog post about my word going up tomorrow morning ( Saturday Jan 5) I have also put in a pingback to this post as the inspiration for choosing a word. Thank you Keith@

[…] what my goals were for 2019 and I came across a post from fellow blogger Keith Haney of “The Light Breaks Through” that struck a chord with me. He has chosen a word. Just one word. He has set his sights on one word […]

Clearly, you already are influencing people starting with this post itself.
I have picked the word “FOCUS”. This year I will focus on that what is truly important with my thoughts and my actions.
    Cheers!

I like that word. That will probably be devotional three. So far courageous is this Monday and Grace the following Monday. Stay tuned!

A thwarted home robbery/break-in in November left me with a hand wound from a gunshot. Two surgeries plus painful therapy, it is an effort to do the many daily tasks of a Lutheran School principal. With retirement on the horizon, it would be easy to just go there now. Yet words like persevere, endure, steadfastness and especially fulfill as in Colossians 4:17 ring in my head. The verse that resonated in me in the days that followed was John 16:33 – trouble indeed. Yet the word(s) that really stick with me and comfort me are, “take heart” and “overcome.” “Overcome” is a good word for me this year – to take heart in His overcoming the world.

I love that word. Especially the Greek version of it. I see another devotional message coming on this one. Thanks for sharing.
