At TEDWomen, Tony Porter makes a call to men everywhere: Don’t “act like a man.” Telling powerful stories from his own life, he shows how this mentality, drummed into so many men and boys, can lead men to disrespect, mistreat and abuse women and each other. His solution: Break free of the “man box.”

Outstanding! I have been fighting against the constraints of the “Man Box”, since I was very young. While insight given by the Holy Spirit, has provided some victories in dealing with those constraints, the specter of pseudo-masculinity haunts me even today. I don’t have many close male friends, nor do I engage in many typically masculine activities. The things that I value about God-Given masculinity , strength with a godly purpose, edification, protection, love, sacrifice, don’t often fit into these settings. Feeling like an outsider amongst my male peers has often given the constraints of the “Man Box” undue power over my life and emotions.

Mr. Porter has so clearly articulated the damage this type of thinking can do. The story of Johnny’s horrible abuse of Sheila, illustrates this so clearly. This diseased thought process, or condition of the proverbial heart, has been seeded in too many young males and is incubating there. Given an chance, this opportunistic infection spreads and can do horrible damage.

Thank You. I am so grateful for this post.
