The Word for 2019: Light

A man is taken out of darkness and into the light

When I was a kid I was afraid of the dark. Because bad things lurk around in the dark especially in the South. Big flying cockroaches lurk in the darkness. It makes mid-night snacks interesting and adventurous. You tend to not make great decisions in the dark. This illustration below is a prime example.

Making decisions in the dark can lead to some regrettable consequences. Back in the days before electricity, a tightfisted old farmer was taking his hired man to task for carrying a lighted lantern when he went to call on his best girl. “Why,” he exclaimed, “when I went a-courtin’ I never carried one of them things. I always went in the dark.” “Yes,” the hired man said wryly,” and look what you got!” – Source Unknown.

God’s first act in creation was to turn on the lights. Jesus refers to Himself as the light in John 8:12. Jesus spoke to the people again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

One of my readers picked the word light for 2019, what a great word. Lord let me be a person who turns on the light of faith for those unconnected people walking in darkness. Let me be a person whose light shines and isn’t hidden under a bushel. A person’s whose life points people back to the one true light, Jesus Christ. Imagine if we all sought to be people of light?

God, you have given us Jesus as the Light of the world. As Paul reminds the children of light,

5 We don’t preach about ourselves. Instead, we preach about Jesus Christ as Lord, and we describe ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6 God said that light should shine out of the darkness. He is the same one who shone in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:5-7 (CEB) May the light that has shone in our hearts burst forth in the world so we may reflect the Light in lives of those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
